Create an 18th century Larkin & Smith gown!

In this 2.5-day workshop, Emily Stringham of At the Sign of the Golden Scissors will teach us to construct an English stomacher front gown in a period manner using the Larking and Smith English Gown Pattern.

18th century gown workshop at the Colonel Paul Wentworth HouseThe en fourreau back was one of the most popular styles of gown during the 18th century and can easily suit a variety of impressions depending on choice of fabric and trim. The focus for this workshop will be on making gowns suitable to the early 1770s with information on how to make an earlier style if desired.

At the end of the workshop, you will have a personalized pattern for reuse and your gown 75-90% finished. During the workshop, you will also have the chance to examine some of the original 18th century items in the collection of the Golden Scissors!

COST: $280 (A portion of this fee will benefit The Wentworth House.)

Make sure you have a copy of the pattern for the workshop! Go to the Golden Scissors website to purchase your Larkin and Smith English Gown Pattern, and it will be mailed to you prior to the workshop. (They also have great information on how to size, etc.)

Bodice lining fabric is included. Home work will be required to complete your gown! Pre-approval of fabric is also necessary to ensure you have what you need. Stays are required to fit your gown. Students should plan to bring and wear their shift, stays, under petticoat, and shoes. Students should be familiar with basic hand sewing skills and have some knowledge of 18th century clothing.

An email with pre-workshop homework, information on selecting fabrics, directions to the workshop location, and suggested lodging will be sent out prior to the workshop. Complimentary snacks provided (please notify us of any food restrictions). Plan to bring a bag lunch on Saturday and Sunday!

A minimum of 4 is required for the gown workshop (6 people max for this particular workshop location.) This is a two-and-a-half day workshop. To be added to the waitlist, please email us at atthesignofthegoldenscissors@gmail.com.
